SEIU Local 668, representing caseworkers and supervisors who administer public benefits, including SNAP, in Pennsylvania’s County Assistance Offices, condemns the actions by the White House and the USDA to prevent states from pre-issuing November SNAP benefits during the ongoing federal government shutdown. During the 2018-2019 shutdown, the USDA paid February SNAP benefits in January, allowing Americans in need to continue to access vital food supports. This could be done today to ensure, regardless of political gridlock, that families get SNAP benefits for November.

Let us be clear: while the Federal Government shutdown continues to be fought in the Senate, the White House is making a deliberate choice to allow working class Americans to go hungry, despite having the power to mitigate this problem. Our demand is not radical: we call on President Trump to use the exact same authority that he did in 2019 to prevent families from going hungry during this time of crisis.
